Best Chef

The Best Chef of the West is an event ,a sustainable strategy and a celebration of food. It is parody of the Iron chef television show on SBS. Complete with video screens, mc’s, music and cuisine, it will focus on what bring us together and what we can all do to minimise environmental dam-age while eating food and highlight the health/cultural benefits of local food production. It will be situated at Footscray Markets cnr of Hopkins and Leeds Street. The event will attempt to be zero-waste , with all food waste going to the community gardens in the region.

It takes shape as a showcase/cabaret format of different food types and chefs from around the Western Suburbs In a similar style to the Iron Chef show , each chef has a certain amount of time to be able to cook up a dish utilising a certain ingredient. The food will then be served to a selection of judges which represent different administrative , artistic and cultural institutions to decide, in the words of the television show ‘Whose cuisine reigns supreme’ . It is hoped that the variety of chefs will reflect the diversity of cultures within the Maribyrnong region. Splice it up with some local music, a sustainability teach-in , local documentaries on food and a feast. It’s a mock competition . The event will coincide with a booklet that is an overview of restaurants , cafes and markets as well as a guide to the facilities of recycling , horticulture and health.
